U.S. President Donald Trump said he was not underestimating Tehran’s resistance but claimed the U.S. could destroy Iran’s infrastructure “in two days” if it wanted to.
Trump discussed Iran in an interview with Fox News as the effects of his visit to China continued.
The U.S. president said he was aware of Iran’s resistance and was not taking anything lightly, but argued that Washington could cause major damage to Iran in a short period of time.
Trump said he had not damaged all of Iran’s infrastructure.
“We can destroy everything in two days,” Trump said.
Referring to repeated setbacks in diplomacy with Iran, Trump claimed Tehran was “unreliable and unpredictable” in negotiations.
“They were going to give us everything we wanted, but every time they made a deal, the next day they acted as if we had never had that conversation. This has probably happened five times. There is something wrong with them,” Trump said.
Trump said a possible solution could be military or diplomatic, depending on Iran’s position.
“It will either be violent or non-violent; I prefer the non-violent one,” he said.
Asked about congressional elections scheduled for Nov. 3 in the U.S., Trump said he would not let the elections decide what happens on Iran.
“I will not let the elections decide what happens on Iran,” he said.
Trump also repeated his position that Tehran cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons.
