U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Washington is open to engaging with Iran, while claiming Tehran wants to reach an agreement “quickly and badly.”
“The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“I will determine whether or not the U.S.A. will choose to engage — The concept of which we are open to,” he added.
The comments marked a shift after weeks in which Trump had said it was too early to reach a deal with Tehran to end the Middle East war.
The U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israel and U.S. military targets across the region.
Washington and Tehran reached the Islamabad understanding in June through Pakistani and Qatari mediation, but implementation later stalled amid disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. resumed military attacks on Iran in August, while Tehran responded by striking U.S. military assets in several Arab countries aligned with Washington.
