Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Tuesday he will begin a tour of regional countries starting Wednesday to discuss possible steps to stop the war in the Middle East.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Fidan said the tour aims to convey messages from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and share Türkiye’s assessments and proposals on how regional peace can be made permanent.

Criticism of Israeli actions

Fidan said political assassinations targeting Iranian officials and political figures are “illegal acts outside the normal laws of war” and must end immediately.

He also criticized what he described as Israel’s political assassinations of top Iranian officials, calling them unlawful and saying they must come to an end as soon as possible.

Growing regional risks

Fidan said the war has begun to spread in Lebanon and is becoming increasingly complicated in Iraq, warning that the situation poses growing risks.

He added that Türkiye’s efforts to remove what he described as “the calamity of war hanging over the Islamic world” continue without interruption.

“Our goal is the same: a geography where everyone lives within their own borders in security and sovereignty, where Palestinians have their own state, and where Iran, Arabs, and all of us live in peace, stability and security,” Fidan said.

Talks with Russia and mediation role

Fidan also held a phone call Tuesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss efforts to end the ongoing Iran war and return to negotiations, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

The ministers discussed steps to end the conflict and resume talks, while also reviewing developments in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Fidan reiterated that Türkiye is ready to host the next round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, reaffirming Ankara’s role as a potential mediator.

Energy security issues were also discussed, the sources said, while Fidan noted he has held talks with many Western and Eastern counterparts to evaluate developments.
