Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Türkiye believes the “most realistic solution” to the Cyprus issue is the coexistence of two states on the island, reaffirming Ankara’s support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a guarantor state.
Fidan made the remarks in a social media post after what he described as a highly productive working visit to the TRNC.
During the visit, he met TRNC President Tufan Erhurman, Prime Minister Unal Ustel and Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu to discuss bilateral relations and recent developments concerning the Cyprus issue.
Fidan said Türkiye has always regarded the security, development and prosperity of the Turkish Cypriot people as a priority.
“As the motherland and guarantor state, we continue our support for our Turkish Cypriot brothers and sisters to build their future freely, securely and prosperously,” Fidan said.
“We believe that the most realistic solution to the Cyprus issue lies in the two states on the island existing side by side.”
Fidan said recognition of what he described as the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, including sovereign equality and equal international status, was a primary condition for a fair and lasting settlement.
He also called on the international community to take into account what Türkiye considers the legitimate expectations of Turkish Cypriots and the current realities on the island.
Fidan said Türkiye would continue to defend the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people on every platform and deepen solidarity with the TRNC in all areas.
He said this approach was in line with the vision President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had once again presented at the U.N. General Assembly.
“Türkiye will continue to defend the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people on every platform and strengthen its solidarity with the TRNC in every field,” Fidan said.
He thanked Turkish Cypriot officials for what he described as their warm hospitality during the visit.
Fidan also congratulated the TRNC in advance on the 43rd anniversary of its establishment, which will be marked on Nov. 15.
