Türkiye on Sunday expressed condolences to Poland over a terrorist attack in Krakow that killed six people, as Polish police said the gunman's parents and sister were found shot dead at his home.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the terrorist attack carried out yesterday (7 November) in Krakow, Poland," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Poland, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," the statement noted.

A masked 24-year-old gunman drove onto Krakow’s Main Market Square shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday and opened fire at random, killing six and wounding 16 people, including himself and two police officers.

Krakow terror attack: Parents and sister found dead

The three bodies found late Saturday in an apartment in central Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) northeast of Krakow, were the gunman’s parents and sister, a 53-year-old man and two women aged 52 and 21, regional police said on X.

"Injuries were found on the bodies, which were preliminarily assessed as gunshot wounds," police said, adding that seven firearms were seized from the flat. Counterterrorism officers, forensic experts and a prosecutor worked through the night, and residents of the building were temporarily evacuated. Searches continue beyond the apartment.

The suspect, a Polish citizen from Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski named in the media as Michal O., held a gun permit and had no criminal record, police said. He was a member of a shooting club along with his father. He is in critical condition.

How the attack unfolded

The gunman drove onto the square, fired at passersby, circled the square, and also shot at a No. 1 tram.

He then fled toward the Kazimierz district, collided with another car at the intersection with Dietla Street and was detained after an exchange of fire with police near Dietla and Stradomska streets.

One officer, named by police as Jakub Kulik, suffered three gunshot wounds and is in very serious condition. Police appealed for blood donors. The Interior Ministry later described his condition as serious but stable.

Among the dead are four Polish citizens, one British national and a woman who was not a Polish citizen, Malopolska Governor Krzysztof Kleczar said. Among the injured are 11 Poles and five foreigners from Britain, Portugal, Russia, Germany and Austria, one of them in serious condition.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said the suspect acted alone and appeared to be influenced by far-right ideologies, which is being investigated.

Square sealed again

Police will close the Main Market Square and adjacent streets again to re-examine the scene in daylight, with officers at every entrance, police spokeswoman Katarzyna Cislo said.

The suspect’s car, the vehicle it struck and a police car have been taken to Krakow police headquarters for examination, she said, urging witnesses who filmed the attack to come forward.

Mourners laid candles on Sunday at the cordoned-off square as Poland began two days of national mourning on Nov. 8-9, with condolences, including Türkiye's, continuing to arrive after the Krakow terror attack.
