Turkish diplomatic sources said Türkiye is closely following with concern the attacks involving the United States, Israel, and Iran that also affect countries across the region, stressing that Ankara is not on the side of any country in the conflict.
According to the sources, Ankara’s priorities focus on ensuring a ceasefire and reopening the path to diplomacy, protecting Türkiye’s border security, and ensuring the safety of Turkish citizens in countries where attacks are taking place.
Diplomatic sources said regional problems should be resolved on the basis of international law, noting that Türkiye considers recent attacks in the region unacceptable.
Israel launched what it described as a “preemptive” attack against Iran early Saturday under the name “Lion’s Roar,” declaring a “special and immediate” state of emergency across the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump later said U.S. forces launched “major combat operations” in Iran aimed at “protecting the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
The attacks came as talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program had been ongoing under the mediation of Oman. A new round of talks in Geneva ended on Thursday.
Last June, the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites during the 12-day Israel-Iran war.
Diplomatic sources shared the following assessment:
“Türkiye is following with concern the conflicts taking place in our region and the attacks carried out against countries in the region and finds them unacceptable. Resolving the problems in our region on the basis of international law is essential.
From the very beginning, Türkiye has made efforts to prevent this military escalation, has made it clear that it is opposed to an attack against Iran, and has stated that problems should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. As will be recalled, our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks on this matter with US President Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian.
Türkiye is not on the side of any country in this conflict; it is on the side of lasting peace, tranquility, and stability, and has not provided support to any country for attacks.
Türkiye desires that this conflict, which opens the door to an instability in our region and in the world whose consequences would take decades to remedy, come to an end as soon as possible without spreading further, and that there be a return to dialogue and negotiation. In this process, it will continue to believe in diplomacy and strive for peace.”
The sources said Türkiye currently has three main priorities. The first is ensuring a ceasefire in the region, minimizing civilian casualties, and reopening the door to diplomacy, with necessary diplomatic initiatives underway for that purpose.
The second priority is protecting Türkiye’s security at all levels, primarily border security. Measures are being taken around the clock to safeguard border security and national security.
The third priority is ensuring the safety of Turkish citizens in countries where attacks are taking place.
Sources said situations of Turkish citizens in affected countries are being closely monitored through foreign missions and consular communication lines, and necessary measures are being taken.
