British counterterrorism police arrested 10 men, including an Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian citizens, over suspected surveillance of Jewish community targets in London linked to Iran, the Metropolitan Police said, as the U.K. government defended its handling of the Middle East crisis and repatriated citizens from the region.

The four men with links to Iran were arrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service shortly after 1 a.m. at addresses in Barnet, north London and Watford, the Metropolitan Police said.

The investigation relates to Iran and to suspected surveillance of locations and individuals linked to the Jewish community in the London area.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counterterrorism policing in London, said the arrests "are part of a long-running investigation."

"We understand the public may be concerned, in particular the Jewish community and as always, I would ask them to remain vigilant and if they see or hear anything that concerns them, then to contact us," Flanagan said.

Of the four arrested on the spying charge, one is Iranian and three are dual British-Iranian nationals. Six other men were also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
