Russia’s state nuclear energy company Rosatom said Ukraine carried out an overnight attack on a laboratory building and a radioactive waste processing facility at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, damaging the roofs of both buildings but causing no injuries or threat to nuclear safety.

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev told reporters in Moscow that the facilities targeted in the attack were located near the plant’s fourth and fifth power units.

He said the roofs of both the laboratory building and the radioactive waste processing facility were damaged.

Likhachev added that no one was injured and that the attack did not create a threat to nuclear safety.

Plant administration confirms damage

The administration of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant also confirmed the attacks.

It said targeting facilities located close to the power units created risks for both infrastructure and personnel.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is Europe’s largest nuclear power station.

Russian forces took control of the plant in March 2022 following the start of the war in Ukraine.
