The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli has denied a report by NBC News claiming that the Trump administration had considered a plan to permanently relocate up to one million Palestinians from Gaza to Libya.

In a post on social media platform X, the embassy quoted NBC News’s original post and stated, “The report claiming that Gaza residents would be relocated to Libya is completely false.”

NBC News, in a report published on May 16, cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter, alleging that the U.S. government under former President Donald Trump had explored a proposal to move a large number of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Libya.

According to the report, two individuals said to have direct knowledge of the discussions, along with a former U.S. official, claimed the plan was considered seriously enough to have been discussed with Libyan leadership.

The report further alleged that the U.S. could unfreeze billions of dollars in Libyan assets, frozen for over a decade, as part of the deal.

NBC also reported that Israeli officials were made aware of the discussions, but that no final agreement was ever reached.

The U.S. Embassy’s categorical denial comes amid heightened scrutiny over reports involving potential population transfers related to the Gaza conflict.
