The U.S. ambassador to Türkiye and special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, on Friday thanked Qatar for fully financing a new energy initiative set to deliver natural gas to war-torn Syria, calling it a key step toward regional stability.
In a post on X, Barrack wrote: “Heartfelt thanks to Qatar for fully funding a vital gas initiative for Syria.”
He added that beginning Saturday, Azerbaijani gas delivered via Türkiye will generate 800 megawatts (MW), providing electricity to 5 million homes. He hailed the project as a "profound step toward relief and stability at a critical moment."
The development comes as Türkiye prepares to export natural gas to Syria for the first time, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed earlier this week.
Bayraktar announced that natural gas from Azerbaijan will be transported through Kilis into Aleppo, forming the backbone of a new trilateral energy cooperation involving Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Syria.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to rebuild Syria’s shattered energy infrastructure after over a decade of civil war.
