U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, on Wednesday criticized the terrorist group SDF for delaying negotiations with the Syrian government, urging it to expedite the process and fully commit to Syria’s territorial and institutional unity.
“There is only one path forward, and it leads to Damascus,” Barrack said in an interview with North Press Agency. “Federalism will not work in Syria.”
Barrack’s remarks came after a meeting at the Tishreen Palace in Damascus between SDF representatives and officials from Syria’s transitional government.
The talks, observed by the U.S. envoy, came amid a deal between the terrorist group and the Syrian government in March to integrate into the new Syrian administration.
Barrack added that while the Syrian government had laid out its expectations clearly and shown some degree of flexibility, the SDF had yet to match that urgency. “I believe they are open to negotiations, but the process is far too slow. My advice to them is to speed it up,” he said.
The envoy called on the group to accept Syria as “one nation, one army, and one people,” stressing that reintegration into the national system was the only viable outcome. “This is not easy for the SDF, but it is the only way forward,” he said.
Barrack concluded that the SDF must now evolve and align with the Syrian state to ensure stability for all parties involved.
