The U.S. House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution Tuesday directing President Donald Trump to remove American forces from hostilities with Iran.
The lower chamber approved H. Con. Res. 93 by a vote of 220-204.
Seven Republicans voted in favor of the measure, which was sponsored by Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton.
It marked the third time the House had approved a similar war powers resolution.
Moulton’s office said the vote marked another step toward ending the Trump administration’s military conflict with Iran.
“A war that Donald Trump said would last a few weeks is now at six months and counting. A war that Congress did not authorize and that the American people do not want,” the office said.
“Tonight’s vote on Rep. Moulton’s war powers resolution was another step in ending Trump’s war with Iran, but the work doesn’t stop here. We will keep up the pressure until Trump folds,” it added.
Separately, Rep. Gregory Meeks, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, criticized the Trump administration’s military campaign after the House passed the resolution.
Meeks said the U.S. had been involved in the conflict for nearly 200 days and argued that the administration had failed to achieve its stated objectives.
He cited higher gas prices and mortgage rates, inflation, billions of dollars in government spending and U.S. military casualties as costs of the conflict.
So far, 19 U.S. service members have been killed and more than 750 wounded since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28.
“This is now the third War Powers Resolution that has passed the House to end this war, including my own resolution which passed both chambers,” Meeks said.
“The president must end this failed war and appoint real diplomats, not real estate developers, to work multilaterally on a diplomatic solution that opens the Strait and reduces tensions,” he added.
