A U.S. soldier died during a "training-related incident" at an air base in northern Iraq, the Pentagon said Wednesday.
The Pentagon identified the soldier as Sgt. Devin A. Seibel, 26, of Robinson, Texas.
Seibel died on May 31 at the Erbil Air Base while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led mission against the Daesh terrorist group.
The Pentagon said the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation and did not immediately release additional details about the incident.
The announcement came as Iraqi authorities said a newly formed committee had begun efforts to place all weapons in the country under exclusive state control.
"The committee, formed under the directive of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, who is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, has begun its work to place weapons under state control," military spokesman Sabah al-Nu'man told Al-Iraqiya News, according to the state news agency INA.
According to Nu'man, the committee will develop mechanisms to integrate armed formations into state institutions and to transfer weapons, equipment, and military camps to Iraqi security authorities.
"The committee will establish mechanisms for the integration of the relevant formations and for transferring weapons, equipment, and military camps to the Iraqi security authorities," he said.
Nu'man said the process would include restructuring formations operating under the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) umbrella while protecting the rights of their members.
"The separation of formations from the PMF includes restructuring these formations and safeguarding the rights of their members," he added.
The PMF was established in 2014 following a religious edict issued by Iraq's top Shiite cleric Ali al-Sistani to help combat the Daesh terrorist group.
The force was later formally incorporated into Iraq's armed forces under a government decision adopted in 2016.
