Americans in Iran are being advised to leave the country by land as soon as possible, according to a security alert issued by the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs.

The department said those who are able to depart should do so now.

According to the alert, options for leaving Iran by land include travel to Türkiye and Armenia. A valid U.S. passport is required to enter those countries.

For Americans who are unable to leave Iran, the department advised finding a secure location and sheltering in place.
