Uzbekistan’s International Media Forum opened at the Center of Islamic Civilization in Tashkent as the country marks the 35th anniversary of its independence, bringing together journalists, writers, academics and media experts from several countries.
Ali Tufekci of Türkiye Daily reported that the forum focuses on conveying Uzbekistan’s Islamic and cultural heritage to contemporary media audiences as part of initiatives launched under President Sevket Mirzoyev.
At the opening, speakers emphasized drawing on the legacy of Sunni scholars to improve understanding of Islam and encouraged cooperation in media publishing.
Uzbekistan Communications Department head Sherzod Asadov highlighted the scholarly heritage of figures including Imam Maturidi, Imam Bukhari, Imam Tirmidhi and Shah-i Naqshbandi.
“We should preserve the legacy of our great scholars and benefit from this heritage in a world driven by algorithms,” Asadov said.
He called for their works to be made available on digital platforms in formats young people can understand rather than being confined to museums and displays.
“We need to be a bridge, not a wall, in transferring this national heritage,” he said.
The forum will continue through Aug. 29, with media representatives, television executives, academics and journalists discussing Uzbekistan’s place in Islamic civilization.
