'We see Syria's security as our own,' says Turkish defense minister

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler said Türkiye welcomes the Syrian government's counterterrorism operation in Aleppo, emphasizing that Türkiye sees Syria's security as its own and supports its fight against terrorist organizations based on the principle of "one state, one army."

"The Syrian government has launched a counterterrorism operation against terrorist activities carried out by terrorists in Aleppo to ensure public order and the safety of its citizens' lives. This operation targeting all terrorist groups has been welcomed by us," Guler said at a joint press conference following the Türkiye-Indonesia Foreign and Defense Ministers Joint Meeting on Friday.

"I want to reiterate that we see Syria's security as our own security, and that we support its fight against terrorist organizations on the basis of Syria's unity and territorial integrity, in line with the principle of one state, one army," he added.

Türkiye-Indonesia strategic partnership

Defense Minister Guler and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Ankara for the joint meeting.

Turkish defense minister noted that the ministers held a constructive and productive discussion, emphasizing that Türkiye-Indonesia relations, which draw strength from their historical and cultural ties, are deepening with a strategic partnership and multidimensional cooperation approach.

"In today's meeting, we comprehensively discussed strategic security issues and priorities, defense and security, defense industry, and global security cooperation," he said.

Guler also added that they exchanged views on current developments in different regions of the world, "We agreed that the international security environment is becoming increasingly complex and interconnected, and that ensuring global peace and stability is possible through closer dialogue, cooperation, and strengthening multilateral mechanisms."

"We also reached an understanding that international coordination needs to be strengthened to increase the effectiveness of mechanisms such as peacekeeping operations within the scope of global security cooperation," he added.

Defense industry cooperation between the 2 nations to advance

Guler said they agreed to further advance existing cooperation in defense and defense industry through concrete projects and long-term partnerships, saying, "The cooperation between Türkiye and Indonesia, which is deepening and enriching day by day, including defense, military, and security issues, has a quality that will serve the common interests and expectations of both countries."

"Moreover, this close cooperation will also contribute to regional and global peace and stability," he added.

Defense Minister Guler and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin also visited Turkish defense giant Aselsan's Golbasi campus following the joint meeting, the Ministry of National Defense announced.

During the visit, Guler and his delegation briefed Sjamsoeddin on Aselsan's indigenous and national technology products.

Guler was accompanied by Chief of General Staff Gen. Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) President Haluk Gorgun, Aselsan General Manager Ahmet Akyol, Roketsan General Manager Murat Ikinci, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) General Manager Mehmet Demiroglu, and Military Factory and Shipyard Management Inc. (ASFAT) General Manager Mustafa Ilbas.
