Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia understands Türkiye’s security concerns regarding its border with Syria, emphasizing that Türkiye’s security interests must be ensured while preserving Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.

Speaking at an online press conference with Russian and international journalists in Moscow, Lavrov highlighted Türkiye’s approach to border security issues.

“We understand the security concerns of the Turkish government and people regarding the Syrian border. There have been repeated incidents caused by terrorist organizations, creating instability in the region. Türkiye’s security interests must be ensured while maintaining Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity. The Turkish government maintains this approach, and we support it,” Lavrov said.

Russia maintains diplomatic ties with Syria’s new administration

Lavrov underlined that Russia’s diplomatic presence in Damascus has remained uninterrupted, even after the fall of the previous Syrian administration.

“Through our diplomatic mission, we maintain communication with representatives of Syria’s new administration. We are consulting on ensuring the safety of Russian citizens and the security of our embassy’s operations. Additionally, we are open to dialogue on bilateral and regional issues,” he explained.

Lavrov referenced statements made by Ahmed al-Sharaa, de facto leader of Syria’s new administration, about strategic relations with Russia.

“Shara described our relationship as long-term and strategic. We support this perspective and are ready to continue cooperation with Syria across all sectors,” Lavrov added.

Western influence in Syria raises concerns

Lavrov criticized Western countries, particularly the United States, for their activities in eastern Syria.

“The United States occupies territories in eastern Syria, where there are rich oil fields and fertile lands. These resources are being exported, and the revenues are used to support separatist groups,” Lavrov noted, adding that preventing Syria’s division must remain a priority.

Astana Process, regional cooperation

Lavrov recalled the recent Astana Format discussions held on the sidelines of the Doha Forum in Qatar.

“We continue consultations on the situation in Syria. Türkiye, Iran, and Russia share the view that the Astana Format remains a productive platform for addressing these issues,” he said.

Addressing Israel’s actions in Syria

Regarding Israel‘s operations in Syria, Lavrov emphasized the importance of mutual responsibility in regional stability.

“Israel must understand its responsibility in joint initiatives and refrain from ensuring its security at the expense of other nations,” Lavrov stated.
