A fast-moving wildfire near the village of Liti, northwest of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, has left two people dead and one injured, authorities said on Wednesday, after firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The fire broke out on Tuesday in dry vegetation and rapidly spread due to strong winds and high temperatures, threatening residential areas and prompting evacuations in surrounding communities.
Fire services recovered the body of a 66-year-old man in a forested area near the settlement. A second body was later discovered inside a fire-damaged house.
Authorities have not yet officially identified the second victim, though local residents suggest it may be the missing 12-year-old son of the injured woman.
A 40-year-old woman was rescued from the same property with burn injuries and was transferred to the hospital in Thessaloniki for treatment.
According to the Fire Service, more than 100 firefighters, supported by dozens of fire engines as well as aerial units including aircraft and helicopters, were deployed to combat the blaze under difficult conditions.
Officials confirmed that the main fire front has been contained. However, firefighting crews remain in the area to extinguish remaining hotspots and secure the perimeter.
