Aerial and ground crews are battling forest fires that broke out Wednesday, July 2, in the Cesme and Odemis districts of Izmir, a province in Türkiye’s Aegean region.
In Cesme’s Ildir neighborhood, a fire that began in agricultural land spread to a nearby forest area due to strong winds.
Five planes, 18 helicopters, numerous fire trucks, and heavy machinery were dispatched to the scene.
Ildir, Germiyan, and Nohutalan, neighborhoods located in Cesme and Urla districts, were evacuated as a precaution.
In Odemis’s Tosunlar neighborhood, a forest fire broke out in the Manastir area and quickly spread to nearby Sucikti neighborhood.
Both Tosunlar and Sucikti were evacuated for safety, and some homes in Tosunlar sustained damage.
Efforts to bring both fires under control are ongoing.
In a statement shared by the General Directorate of Forestry, it was noted that firefighting efforts in Izmir are being hindered not only by the flames but also by strong winds reaching up to 60 km/h.
Cesme Mayor Lal Denizli stated that extensive efforts are underway to contain the wildfire, involving the General Directorate of Forestry, Izmir and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Fire Departments, Cesme Municipality's municipal police, Parks and Gardens and Public Works Directorates, IZSU, District Gendarmerie Command, Izmir AKUT, and numerous search and rescue teams.
While the wildfire in Izmir’s Odemis district remains out of control, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli announced that blazes in parts of Izmir’s Seferihisar, Manisa’s Akhisar, Hatay, and Bilecik have been fully contained.
