A Ukrainian drone attack on Wednesday caused a fire at technology giant Yandex’s data center in Sasovo, in Russia’s Ryazan region, damaging part of the facility’s infrastructure and forcing it to shut down completely.
In a statement reported by Russian media, Yandex confirmed no injuries and said emergency crews were working to address the damage. The company warned that some services may be unavailable as it works to restore the affected infrastructure.
The Sasovo facility, which opened in 2014, is Yandex’s largest data center and forms part of the company’s wider network of facilities supporting its online services and cloud infrastructure. Servers at the site run Yandex services as well as systems used by external companies through Yandex Cloud.
The facility is also backed by a dedicated 110-kilovolt power substation, which was commissioned in 2014 specifically to supply electricity to the data center. Russia’s System Operator said the substation was designed to provide up to 53 megawatts of power to the site.
Russian media, citing footage from the area, determined that the Yandex fire occurred on the premises of the Sasta machine-tool plant, which also houses the data center.
The outage following the attack affected Yandex Cloud’s availability zone in Sasovo, with the company advising customers to move workloads to other zones while engineers worked to restore services. Some disruptions also spread to Yandex’s broader cloud infrastructure.
Yandex shares fell more than 3% on the Moscow Stock Exchange following the incident.
Russia’s Emergency Situations Service reported that a drone threat was active in the Ryazan region overnight, from 11:48 p.m. to 2:06 a.m. local time.
Ukrainian monitoring channels reported that drones targeted the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat complex in Bashkortostan, with explosions reported near the facility. A fire was also reported in the area of the refinery, although there was no immediate official confirmation of the cause or extent of any damage.
The Salavat complex, which belongs to the Gazprom group, is one of Russia’s largest oil refining and petrochemical facilities. Its refinery can process up to 10 million tons of hydrocarbon feedstock annually and produces gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, bitumen and other petrochemical products.
The facility has been targeted in previous drone attacks. An attack in July forced the refinery to halt oil processing after damage to its main processing units, while another attack in August also caused a fire at the site.
Local residents also reported explosions in nearby Sterlitamak, although those reports were not immediately independently confirmed.
