Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there could be a “possible use” of Ukrainian sea drones in the Strait of Hormuz, as disruptions linked to regional violence continue to affect transit through the strategic waterway.
Zelenskyy made the remarks in an audio message shared with journalists, describing the idea as part of “more deals to be signed” with partners in the Middle East.
Zelenskyy said the issue was raised due to its global significance amid ongoing disruptions.
“We raised this issue because it is a pressing and sensitive matter for the entire world, given the current energy crisis,” he said.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, has been effectively shut by Iran’s retaliation following U.S.-Israeli strikes since Feb. 28, leading to rising oil prices and strain on food supplies.
Zelenskyy said partners in the region are aware of Ukraine’s capabilities.
“They know they can count on our expertise in this area,” he added.
Zelenskyy pointed to Ukraine’s experience in the Black Sea, where Ukrainian forces have used naval drones to strike Russian tankers and help unblock the Black Sea Corridor.
“Arab leaders understand that our armed forces have been very successful in unblocking the Black Sea Corridor,” he said.
He added that while the United States is handling the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Ukraine is ready to assist.
“As for other areas, such as the Strait of Hormuz, in my view, the United States is handling that. We are certainly ready to assist our partners,” he said.
Zelenskyy’s remarks came after a defense agreement was signed between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia, as Kyiv seeks to expand its cooperation with Middle Eastern countries.
