English powerhouse Liverpool is gearing up for changes, with former Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso expected to take charge and target Arda Guler as part of an attacking rebuild following Mohamed Salah’s departure, Spanish media said.
The Merseyside club has reportedly offered Guler a high salary along with assurances of a starting role as part of its approach, Spanish news outlet elnacional.cat reported.
According to the report, Alonso is set to return to coaching in the summer after leaving Real Madrid, with reports indicating he has largely agreed to terms with the English side where he previously spent five seasons at Anfield during his playing career.
Club officials have been dissatisfied with this season’s results despite significant investment, and a change on the bench is expected, with current coach Arne Slot likely to leave.
If appointed, Alonso is expected to target players he has previously worked with, such as Arda Guler, the report suggested.
The Turkish international, 21, drew attention at Madrid, particularly during a period when Jude Bellingham was unavailable, delivering consistent performances in an advanced role.
He has remained a regular under Alonso’s successor, Alvaro Arbeloa, although questions remain about his role once all players return from injury.
Guler has made 45 appearances for the Madrid side so far this season, scoring 4 goals and providing 13 assists.
His consistent performances have also lifted his transfer market value to €90 million ($103.9 million), making him the first Turkish footballer to reach that threshold.
His contract with Los Blancos is set to run until the end of the 2029 season.
