A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is closing in on a deal to acquire a stake of over 30% in English Premier League club Liverpool, according to Sky News.

The consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

Announcement expected this week

Liverpool's controlling shareholder, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is preparing to announce the transaction as early as this week. FSG confirmed in July that Bhatia's consortium had approached the group about acquiring a minority stake in the club.

The deal would value Liverpool at about $6 billion, with the stake valued at roughly $1.8 billion. FSG would retain control of the club.

Who is behind the consortium

Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, was a director and co-owner of Championship club Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before relinquishing his stake last month.

Forbes estimates Bezos' fortune at more than $280 billion, making him the world's fourth-richest person. Saverin, 44, is worth over $32 billion. He was previously part of a consortium that made an unsuccessful bid for Chelsea FC during the 2022 ownership auction.

FSG's ownership since 2010

FSG has controlled Liverpool since purchasing the club for about $402 million in 2010. It also secured a minority investment from sports investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023.

Liverpool is heading into a season of transition following the departure of head coach Arne Slot and forward Mohamed Salah. The club last won the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season.
