Atletico Madrid has reportedly renewed its interest in Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen after receiving little scoring output from its current forwards, according to Spanish media.

Spain-based Directv Sports reported that Atletico manager Diego Simeone asked the club’s management to sign the Nigerian player in the midseason transfer window. The report said Simeone considers Osimhen the ideal addition and that the club has started work to meet the request.

Atletico’s three main strikers, Jonathan David, Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth, have contributed only four goals in all competitions. David has scored three, Alvarez one, and Sorloth has yet to score.

Giving Galatasaray leverage

Galatasaray signed Osimhen on loan from Napoli at the start of the 2024-25 season and bought his registration, the transfer rights to the player, the following year for €75 million ($83 million).

Galatasaray holds the upper hand in negotiations as his contract lacks a release clause—a set fee allowing another club to buy him without the team's consent.

Atletico had wanted to sign the 27-year-old on several earlier occasions but backed off because of the cost. The Nigerian earns €21 million a year at Galatasaray.

Simeone’s interest is reportedly based on Osimhen’s physical strength, his runs behind opposing defenses and his finishing in the penalty area. In 83 matches for Galatasaray, Osimhen has scored 68 goals and provided 19 assists.
