Wooden cart racers from 12 countries and regions sped down a hillside course in northern Türkiye on Tuesday, with Colombia winning the women's event and Türkiye taking first place in the men's competition.
The traditional race was held in Rize province as part of the 15th International Bagpipe and Folk Dance Festival, which brought together international competitors and spectators to celebrate the Black Sea region's cultural heritage.
A total of 24 competitors took part in the men's and women's races on a 300-meter course in the Konaktepe neighborhood of Ardesen district.
The event featured traditional wooden carts, simple vehicles built from wood and used for downhill racing. Organizers set up barriers made from vehicle tires along hazardous parts of the route to reduce the risk of accidents.
Despite the safety measures, one of the carts broke apart during the competition.
Participants came from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, Georgia, Iran, Russia and Türkiye.
Racers also represented the Russian republics of Adygea, Chechnya, Kabardino, Karachay and Ossetia, adding to the international character of the festival.
