Roland Garros was left without two of its biggest title contenders after world number one Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic suffered shock defeats, opening up the race for the men's singles title.
Sinner's unexpected exit came in the second round when the Italian squandered a commanding lead against Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
After taking the opening two sets and moving within one game of victory in the third, Sinner's challenge unravelled as he struggled physically in the Paris heat. The top seed complained of dizziness and a lack of energy before eventually falling 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.
The defeat brought an end to Sinner's 30-match winning streak and denied him another opportunity to pursue a first French Open crown.
Less than 24 hours later, Djokovic also bowed out of the tournament after suffering a five-set defeat to Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in the third round.
The Serbian appeared in control after claiming the opening two sets, but the 19-year-old produced a fearless and inspired comeback to secure a memorable 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory in nearly five hours of play.
Fonseca's triumph marked the biggest win of his young career and sent him into the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Djokovic, who has been seeking a record-extending 25th Grand Slam singles title since winning the 2023 US Open, acknowledged the Brazilian's outstanding performance.
"Huge credit to Joao. He deserved to win the match," Djokovic said after the contest. "Without a doubt, he was the better player in the crucial moments."
Joao Fonseca is set for a clash with Casper Ruud after both secured their places in the next round, with Ruud advancing following his victory over Tommy Paul.
Alexander Zverev continues his campaign in his section of the draw and remains one of the strongest contenders for the title.
Andrey Rublev progressed comfortably after defeating Nuno Borges in straight sets, while Jesper de Jong continued his breakthrough run by eliminating Karen Khachanov. Jakub Mensik also advanced after overcoming Alex de Minaur.
Elsewhere, Rafael Jodar extended his maiden Grand Slam run by defeating Alex Michelsen, keeping his campaign alive heading into the later rounds.
