Erzurum, a city in eastern Türkiye, will get a modern 20,000-seat stadium, along with sports halls and a swimming pool, all as part of a large sports and life center that will cater to citizens of all ages.

Construction began in August on a 160-donum (395 acres) site in the Yakutiye district. Erzurum Provincial Director of Youth and Sports Levent Cakmur said that the process began on President Erdogan’s instruction, and that the project was then developed in cooperation with the relevant institutions.

“With the instruction given to us by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, we jointly determined a location with the Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality for the construction of the stadium, sports hall, and swimming pool,” Cakmur said.

From land allocation to groundbreaking

Cakmur said the project went to tender once the land was allocated. A ground survey tender followed, and survey work in the area lasted one year. After the reports were prepared, the project moved to the design stage and then to the construction tender.

“With the tender held in August, we started work here,” he said. “God willing, we are about to finish preparations for the groundbreaking ceremony.”

He said the contract for the stadium, sports hall and swimming pool was signed for 500 working days. “When it is completed in 500 working days, with the approval of our president, we will make this place ready to serve the people of Erzurum with a ceremony,” Cakmur said.

Cakmur said work is continuing nonstop, with machines, bored pile machines, cranes and about 150 people on site. “Next year, when rough construction begins, our construction will continue here with a large organization,” he said.

The project was tendered for ₺5.8 billion ($145 million), he said, adding that the site will become a huge construction area where 1,100 to 1,200 people will work once the construction season opens in 2027. He said work is already underway at the site, where many different types of machines are operating.

New stadium to host Erzurumspor FK

Cakmur said fans of Erzurumspor FK, a local football club, will watch matches in a more modern venue once the stadium is finished.

“God willing, when our Erzurumspor gets a very modern stadium, it will play its matches here, and our spectators will watch the games in a more decent and modern stadium,” he said. “We will try to finish it without accidents or problems.”

He said the complex will include a 5,000-seat sports hall, a volleyball and basketball hall, nearly 10 halls for individual sports, cafeterias, prayer rooms and recreation areas where people can spend time.

The stadium will also have commercial areas and halls for individual sports, as well as meeting rooms and a modern, comfortable working space for media organizations.

“In other words, we will have given Erzurum a sports campus that is alive 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Cakmur said.
