Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce misses the chance to open the Turkish Super Lig with a win in an away match against Goztepe on Saturday, as 31-year-old Brazilian Anderson Talisca fails to convert a last-minute penalty.
The match, played at Gursel Aksel Stadium in Izmir, was silenced until the second half, as the home team remained 10 players after Juan was sent off with a red card.
The visiting side also went down to 10 men in the 85th minute when Jayden Oosterwolde received a second yellow card and was sent off.
In the final minutes of added time, Fenerbahce had the chance to secure three points when the referee awarded a penalty.
Talisca stepped up in the 95th minute, but Goztepe goalkeeper Lis saved the effort, ensuring the match ended without goals.
On Wednesday, August 20, the Istanbul club will host Portuguese side Benfica in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League play-off round at Ulker Stadium in Türkiye.
In the league, Fenerbahce will next host newly promoted Kocaelispor on Aug. 23.
Galatasaray, regarded as Fenerbahce’s main rival in the title race and the champion of the past three seasons, opened the league flawlessly and moved into first place.
