A man was taken into custody in Istanbul after punching Galatasaray midfielder Lucas Torreira outside a cafe in the Beyoglu district, police said.

The incident occurred in front of a cafe at a shopping mall in the Camiikebir neighborhood. Officers responding to a tip found the suspect, identified by initials Y.Y., 32, and detained him in a taxi he had boarded in an apparent attempt to flee the scene.

An examination of Torreira found redness between his left eyebrow and eye. The footballer has filed a formal complaint against the suspect and is pressing charges.

Investigators determined that Y.Y. had a prior criminal record for intentional injury. Authorities also discovered that a restraining order was already in place against the suspect at the time of the assault.

Driver also detained after stepping in

Police established that Torreira's driver, identified as E.S., 39, also struck Y.Y. during the incident, reportedly in an attempt to intervene and separate the two men. Processing of both individuals at the police station was ongoing.

Lucas Torreira is a Uruguayan defensive midfielder who joined Galatasaray from Arsenal. Known for his tenacious pressing and combative style of play, Torreira has been a prominent figure in the Turkish Süper Lig since his arrival at the Istanbul club.
