Germany’s Lennart Karl will miss the World Cup after suffering a muscle tear in training, coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

The Bundesliga champions confirmed in a statement that the 18-year-old midfielder suffered a tear in the muscle fibers of his left thigh, ruling him out of Germany's World Cup campaign.

Bayern added that the club would provide full support to the player throughout his recovery.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the injury was particularly unfortunate given its timing ahead of the World Cup.

"Missing the World Cup at the last minute is, of course, incredibly painful," Eberl said.

"However, this does not change the fact that Lennart possesses tremendous talent, passion and potential. Thanks to his outstanding first professional season, he fully deserved to be part of this World Cup."

After making a strong impression in his first full season with Bayern Munich, Karl secured a spot in Germany's squad for the tournament.
