Inter Milan has moved to clarify their position on Hakan Calhanoglu, as uncertainty continues to surround the midfielder’s future ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Italy-based club, currently in a strong position in Serie A, is weighing up its next steps while interest from Galatasaray keeps speculation alive.
According to a report by La Gazzetta dello Sport, head coach Cristian Chivu has already passed on his recommendation to the club’s management, making it clear that he wants Calhanoglu to stay.
The report suggests that once Inter mathematically secures the league title, the club is expected to move ahead with a new contract for Chivu, reinforcing stability at the top. Within this framework, keeping Calhanoglu is seen as part of maintaining continuity during a transitional phase in midfield.
Inter is said to be looking to refresh its midfield rotation, yet Calhanoglu’s presence is viewed as a key factor in helping that transition run more smoothly.
His experience is believed to offer balance as the club gradually reshapes its squad.
As a result, the Italian side is preparing to open contract talks with the Turkish international in the near future, aiming to resolve the uncertainty before it escalates further.
At the same time, the report outlines a fallback plan. If a contract extension cannot be agreed upon, Inter would prefer to keep the player until the end of his current deal, which expires at the end of next season.
Under that scenario, Calhanoglu could be allowed to leave on a free transfer the following summer, rather than being sold immediately.
