The Championship play-off final between Hull City and Southampton has been overshadowed by an ongoing investigation into allegations of improper conduct involving Southampton during the build-up to its semifinal victory over Middlesbrough.
The English Football League (EFL) has launched disciplinary proceedings following claims that a member of Southampton’s staff may have observed Middlesbrough training sessions before the play-off semifinal.
The allegations relate to potential breaches of EFL regulations requiring clubs to act in good faith and prohibiting the monitoring of opponents’ training activities within a restricted period before matches.
An independent commission is currently reviewing the case, with a decision expected on May 19. The ruling could have significant implications for the play-offs, including financial penalties, sporting sanctions, or—in more severe scenarios—alterations to the final line-up or postponement of the fixture.
Southampton secured its place in the final after defeating Middlesbrough in the semifinal stage and is scheduled to face Hull City at Wembley.
Hull City’s Turkish owner Acun Ilicali has commented on the situation, stressing that he will avoid speculation while the investigation remains ongoing.
“I don’t know what decision will be made. As the investigation is still ongoing, it would not be right for me to comment,” Ilicali said in remarks attributed to talkSPORT.
When asked hypothetically how he would react if Hull City were affected by similar circumstances, Ilicali added: “I would be furious. If everything is completely true and there is no doubt, I would be very angry.”
He further commented on the broader implications of the allegations, stating that such incidents are damaging to the sport. While noting that he has a positive view of Southampton’s ownership, Ilicali suggested that any individuals involved in the alleged conduct would have “brought harm to football.”
