The International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced that if a player taking a penalty accidentally touches the ball with both feet and scores, the penalty will be retaken instead of being ruled invalid.

According to the new regulation announced by IFAB, if the player taking the penalty unintentionally touches the ball simultaneously with both feet, or if the ball immediately touches the non-kicking foot or leg after the shot and results in a goal, the penalty kick will be retaken.

The statement added, “If no goal is scored, an indirect free kick will be awarded unless the referee sees an advantage, or the penalty will be considered missed.”

In March, UEFA announced that it had filed an appeal regarding a rule that led to the disallowing of Julian Alvarez’s penalty in Atletico Madrid’s match against Real Madrid.

During the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg match, which went to a penalty shootout, Alvarez had converted Atletico Madrid’s second penalty against Real Madrid. However, VAR review showed Alvarez touched the ball with his supporting foot during the kick, leading to the goal being disallowed for a double touch.

Real Madrid eventually won the shootout 4-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
