Inter Milan striker Mehdi Taremi has been unable to travel to the United States for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup due to Iran's closure of its airspace following Israeli airstrikes on June 13, Italian media reported Friday.
The 32-year-old Iranian international had returned to his home country to represent Iran in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Qatar on June 5 and North Korea on June 10. However, after Israel launched a series of air raids across Iranian territory, Iranian authorities suspended all international flights for security reasons, leaving Taremi unable to leave the country.
Taremi, who recently joined Serie A team Inter—also home to Türkiye international Hakan Calhanoglu—has been in constant contact with the club, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Inter Milan is reportedly mobilizing all available resources to ensure Taremi's safety and is working to bring him to the team’s training camp in Los Angeles ahead of their opening match in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Italian side is scheduled to face Mexican club Monterrey on Wednesday, June 18, at 4 a.m. local time in their first match of the tournament.
The Israeli strikes on Iranian territory, including key military and scientific facilities, have caused multiple casualties and heightened regional tensions. Iran responded by closing its airspace and placing air defenses on high alert.
As of Friday, Taremi remains in Iran, and it is unclear whether he will be able to join his teammates in time for the tournament.
