Italy emerged as the dominant force at the Senior Foil World Cup in Istanbul, topping both individual and team events as the four-day international competition wrapped up in the city.
Held at the Basaksehir Youth and Sports Center, the tournament brought together more than 500 athletes from over 50 countries, highlighting Istanbul’s role as a global sporting hub.
Italy stood out throughout the competition, ultimately claiming gold medals in both individual and team categories in men’s and women’s events.
In the women’s individual final, Martina Favaretto defeated compatriot Arianna Errigo to secure the gold medal, ensuring Italy locked out the top two positions. Bronze medals went to independent athlete Vladislava Peniushkina and France’s Pauline Ranvier.
The men’s individual final followed a similar pattern, with Italy again taking gold as Filippo Macchi overcame independent competitor Egor Barannikov.
Italy carried its momentum into the team competitions, where coordination and cumulative scoring determine outcomes. The Italian women’s team defeated Spain in the final to claim gold, while the men’s team overcame France to complete a clean sweep of titles.
Japan secured bronze in the women’s team event, while Hong Kong, China, finished third in the men’s category.
For the host nation, the competition offered valuable exposure against top-tier international opponents. In the women’s individual event, Alara Atmaca recorded the best result among Turkish athletes, while Kivanc Kirtay led the national men’s performances.
Türkiye Fencing Federation President Abdurrahman Karatas said the event once again showed Istanbul’s capacity to host large-scale international sports competitions. He emphasized that competing against world-class fencers had given Turkish athletes important experience and expressed confidence that future success in foil could match the country’s achievements in sabre.
