Mason Greenwood has officially joined Fenerbahce from Marseille in a transfer that sets a new club record for the Istanbul side and closes one of the summer's most closely watched moves in European football.
The 24-year-old English forward, who scored 48 goals in 76 appearances during his two seasons in France, will sign a contract running to June 2030. The deal is structured around a base fee of approximately €39 million, plus performance-related bonuses, making it the largest transfer fee Fenerbahce has ever paid.
Greenwood becomes the highest-profile summer arrival in the Turkish Super Lig this window and only the second-most expensive incoming transfer in the division's history, behind Victor Osimhen's €75 million move from Napoli to Galatasaray.
The financial structure of the deal is layered, reflecting agreements that date back to Greenwood's departure from Manchester United in 2024.
According to sources briefed on the move, United are set to receive between €12 million and €13 million from the fee, equivalent to roughly 40 percent of the overall package, owing to a sell-on clause inserted when Greenwood signed for Marseille for up to €31.6 million two years ago.
Of United's share, 20 percent is due to Getafe, the Spanish club that took Greenwood on loan during the 2023-24 season.
Fenerbahce director Oguz Cetin and club official Cihan Kamer traveled to Marseille in person to finalize remaining terms after the two clubs reached an agreement in principle.
Greenwood arrived in Istanbul by private aircraft ahead of medical examinations, with the announcement following the completion of registration procedures.
The deal surpasses Fenerbahce's previous record expenditure, the €28 million paid for French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, by a substantial margin.
Greenwood's form at Marseille made him one of the most coveted forwards in Europe heading into this transfer window. He finished last season with 26 goals across all competitions, including 16 in Ligue 1, where he placed joint-second in the golden boot standings.
His versatility, operating on the right wing, through the center, or in a number ten role, added to his appeal for clubs in Italy, Spain, and Saudi Arabia, all of whom were reported to have expressed interest before Fenerbahce secured the signing.
Greenwood came through the academy at Manchester United and made 129 senior appearances for the club, contributing 35 goals and 12 assists, before his career was interrupted in January 2022 when he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.
The UK Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new material that meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. Greenwood denied all allegations.
He has not represented England since making his senior international debut in September 2020, aged 18.
The signing signals an aggressive posture from Fenerbahce, who have operated in the shadow of Istanbul rival Galatasaray in recent seasons.
The club finished the 2024-25 Super Lig campaign without a title, and the addition of a proven goalscorer of Greenwood's caliber represents a direct response to pressure from the club's supporters and technical staff for marquee reinforcements.
