Mauro Icardi has written his name into Galatasaray history by becoming the club’s most prolific foreign goalscorer in the Turkish top flight, overtaking legendary midfielder Gheorghe Hagi. The Argentine striker reached the milestone during Galatasaray’s 3-0 home win over Kasimpasa, sealing both the match and a long-standing club record.
Galatasaray hosted Kasimpasa in the 17th week of the Trendyol Super Lig, the top professional football division in Türkiye. The home side set the tone early when Yunus Akgun opened the scoring in the first half. As the match progressed, Gabriel Sara doubled the advantage late on, before Icardi wrapped things up with a goal in the closing minutes, a strike that not only confirmed the result but also carried historic weight.
That final goal pushed Galatasaray comfortably past their opponents and underlined their authority at the top of the table, allowing the Istanbul club to close out the first half of the league season as leaders.
With his latest goal, Icardi brought his Super Lig tally for Galatasaray to 60 league goals. In doing so, he moved beyond Gheorghe Hagi, who had previously held the record with 59 league goals as the most prolific foreign player in the club’s domestic league history.
Hagi, a Romanian international icon, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Galatasaray’s modern era. By overtaking him, Icardi achieved a landmark that places his name alongside the most celebrated figures in the club’s long history.
The record-breaking moment followed a gradual buildup. One week earlier, Icardi had scored against Antalyaspor, drawing level with Hagi’s total. His goal against Kasimpasa then pushed him clear, making him the outright holder of the record.
Beyond the individual milestone, the victory carried importance for the team as a whole.
By beating Kasimpasa, Galatasaray raised its points total to 42 and secured first place at the halfway stage of the Super Lig season.
