Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk claims the world heavyweight title after defeating Tyson Fury in a highly anticipated match at Kingdom Arena, Riyadh. Fury hints at bias from referees in post-match remarks
The legendary match in the heavyweight boxing category concluded as Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk and British Tyson Fury clashed at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk emerged as the world heavyweight champion after defeating his British opponent. Tyson Fury hinted at Usyk being favored by the referees in his post-match remarks.
‘Usyk received support due to his country’s situation’
Oleksandr Usyk claimed the championship by defeating Tyson Fury as per the referees’ decision. Usyk secured victory over Tyson Fury with split decisions (Two judges favored Usyk with 115-112 and 114-113 scores, while the third judge chose Fury with a 114-113 score), handing the British boxer his first defeat and becoming the undisputed world heavyweight champion.
Expressing disagreement with the decision, Fury stated, “I believe I won this fight. His country is at war, so people naturally side with a country at war.” Fury implied that the referees favored Usyk.
Rematch scheduled
Fury’s organizer confirmed the existence of a clause in the contract granting them an immediate rematch right after the fight.
On the other hand, Oleksandr Usyk stated his readiness for the rematch.
The 37-year-old Ukrainian boxer Usyk became the first boxer to simultaneously hold all four major heavyweight titles and the first undisputed champion in 25 years. Lennox Lewis previously held this title for five months in 1999 and 2000.
