Olympiacos ended a 13-year wait for continental glory by beating Real Madrid 92-85 in the EuroLeague Final Four championship game in Athens, lifting the trophy for the fourth time in the club’s history.
The Greek side, which had previously won Europe’s top-tier club basketball competition in 1997, 2012 and 2013, added the 2026 title after seeing off Fenerbahce Beko in the opening game of the Final Four and then overcoming Real Madrid in the final.
The victory also carried wider historical weight, as Olympiacos became the first team to finish the EuroLeague regular season in first place and then go on to win the title since the competition adopted its league format in the 2016-17 season.
The final also gave Olympiacos a measure of revenge against Real Madrid, who had beaten them in the 2023 EuroLeague final in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In that meeting, the Spanish side secured the title with a late basket by Sergio Llull with three seconds remaining, edging Olympiacos 79-78. Three seasons later, the Greek team faced Real Madrid again in the final, this time in front of its supporters in Athens, and came away with a 92-85 victory.
Across five EuroLeague finals between the two clubs, Real Madrid have now won three, while Olympiacos have taken two.
Real Madrid, the most successful club in EuroLeague history, had to settle for second place after missing out on another title.
The Spanish club has won the competition 11 times and has also finished as runner-up 11 times.
