Galatasaray’s commanding 3-0 victory over Fenerbahce in one of Türkiye’s most intense football rivalries was ultimately overshadowed by late-game tensions, as Victor Osimhen’s aggressive reactions drew widespread attention and reignited debate over his on-field temperament.

Late flashpoint highlights simmering tensions in Istanbul derby

The match, played at Rams Park as part of the Turkish Super Lig’s 31st round, appeared settled in sporting terms before tensions boiled over in stoppage time. Osimhen and Mert Muldur clashed following a foul, with the two players going head-to-head as tempers quickly escalated.

The situation worsened when Muldur threw the ball toward Osimhen, prompting a strong reaction from the Nigerian striker, who attempted to move toward his opponent before teammates stepped in to break things up.

In the chaos, Osimhen briefly grabbed Matteo Guendouzi by the collar.

Referee Yasin Kol eventually brought the situation under control, issuing yellow cards to both Osimhen and Muldur after tensions eased.

Recurring confrontations pattern

This was not the first time the two players had faced off under similar circumstances. A comparable incident took place during a Turkish Cup quarterfinal the previous season.

Osimhen’s conduct during the derby has once again placed his temperament under scrutiny, particularly in high-pressure moments where emotional reactions tend to escalate.

Competitive drive or lack of control?

The forward’s intense playing style, often driven by a strong desire to win, has at times crossed into what observers describe as uncontrolled anger. Reactions to missed passes or unfavorable passages of play have been cited as triggers for visible frustration on the pitch.

This pattern has raised concerns about disciplinary risks, with his aggressive approach increasing the likelihood of cautions. Some commentators characterize him as a “difficult” personality within team dynamics, particularly when reacting to tactical situations.

At the same time, others interpret his behavior as a reflection of relentless ambition, arguing that his emotional intensity can energize teammates and lift the overall performance.

Consistency concerns

Similar concerns had already emerged in February, when Osimhen reportedly showed sudden and tense reactions during a training session involving teammate Abdulkerim Bardakci. That episode, along with previous in-game incidents, has contributed to an ongoing discussion around his ability to manage emotions consistently.

Passion and provocation beyond pitch

Despite the controversy, Osimhen’s visible connection to the club remains evident. His goal celebrations, often involving kissing the club badge, have been widely shared by supporters as a sign of commitment.

He also appeared to respond to rival fans’ social media posts by gesturing toward his arm, referencing online commentary directed at him, which added another layer to the post-match narrative.

As discussions continue, Osimhen’s performances are likely to remain closely watched.
