Turkish Super Lig club Samsunspor’s plan to wear a football kit themed around Mustafa Kemal Atatürk—founder of Republic of Türkiye—in a match against Panathinaikos in the UEFA Europa League play-off round has stirred up debate in Athens, with Greek reports saying the home club is preparing to take the issue to UEFA.
Panathinaikos views the Ataturk-themed shirt as “provocative” and is said to be preparing a formal submission to UEFA regarding the matter, according to Greek outlet Sport-fm. The club refrained from giving out any more details.
Samsunspor designed the shirt to mark Ataturk’s arrival in the Black Sea city of Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is seen as the start of the Turkish War of Independence. The shirt features a stylized image of Ataturk’s eyes.
The first leg of the Europa League play-off will be played in Greece, and the kit request has already become part of the build-up. UEFA's decision regarding the shirt and whether Samsunspor will be able to field it is not yet revealed.
