The Philadelphia Phillies are set to acquire veteran infielder Luis Arraez and right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian from the San Francisco Giants in a trade that remains subject to medical examinations.
In return, San Francisco will receive starting pitcher Ramon Marquez, identified as the Phillies' No. 4 prospect, and reliever Marty Gair. The deal had not yet been formally announced because the players still needed to complete their physicals.
Philadelphia had been looking to bring in a right-handed outfielder but instead pivoted toward Arraez, one of Major League Baseball's most established contact hitters.
The Venezuelan infielder is batting .324 this season with four home runs, 47 runs batted in and an .801 OPS. OPS, or on-base plus slugging percentage, combines a player's ability to reach base with his power production.
Although Arraez bats left-handed, he has also performed consistently against left-handed pitching, batting .315 in those matchups.
His approach stands apart from power-focused hitters because he relies on frequent contact, singles, and getting on base rather than home runs. He has struck out only 21 times this season.
Arraez joined the Giants on a one-year, $12 million contract signed on Feb. 10, 2026.
The 29-year-old will become a free agent after the season unless Philadelphia works out a contract extension with him.
Known by the Spanish nickname "La Regadera," meaning "The Sprinkler," Arraez made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins on May 18, 2019.
He has also played for the Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Giants during his eight-season career.
Arraez has earned multiple All-Star selections, won two Silver Slugger Awards and claimed three batting championships. He holds a career batting average of .318, with 40 home runs and 348 RBIs.
The Phillies are also expected to acquire left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the New York Mets and remain in the market for another experienced starting pitcher.
