Toprak Razgatlioglu, the first Turkish rider in MotoGP, will undergo shoulder surgery on Monday and miss the final five races of the season, his team Prima Pramac Yamaha said in a statement.
Razgatlioglu injured his shoulder in a crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix in Mandalika, on Indonesia’s Lombok island. Additional medical examinations in Milan, northern Italy, showed that the damage requires surgery.
“Unfortunately, the final assessments confirmed that the damage requires surgical intervention for the best recovery,” the team said.
Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez is planned to take part in the upcoming races in his place, according to the statement.
Razgatlioglu also made a statement about the decision. He said: “Medical assessments after the crash in Mandalika showed that my shoulder injury is more serious than we first thought. As a result, I will have surgery in the coming days to maximize my chance of a full recovery and a return at 100% performance. This was not an easy decision, but after speaking with doctors and those closest to me, we were convinced it was the right step for my future.”
A three-time World Superbike champion, Razgatlioglu sits 21st in the overall standings with 18 points after 17 rounds, ahead of the final five races.
