Alperen Sengun turned in an all-around performance for the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night, recording 18 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.
Despite his efforts, the Rockets fell 111-99 to the San Antonio Spurs in a game that could influence Western Conference standings.
The 21-year-old Turkish center was at the heart of Houston’s offense, contributing as a scorer, rebounder, and facilitator. Sengun’s production kept the Rockets competitive through three quarters, as the team entered the final period with a narrow 86-84 lead.
He added two free throws early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to five, but San Antonio regained control with a 10-4 stretch. The Spurs gradually extended their lead, outpacing Houston 27-13 in the final period to seal the win.
The Rockets led by as many as 16 points and were up by 11 midway through the third quarter. San Antonio clawed back with a 16-4 run fueled by Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper, eventually grabbing their first lead at 79-78. The game remained close until the fourth, when Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama took over.
Wembanyama finished with 28 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks. He scored nine of San Antonio’s first 11 points in the fourth quarter, helping flip the momentum in favor of the home team.
With the win, the Spurs take a 2-1 lead in the regular-season series. The final matchup is scheduled for March 8 in San Antonio. The Rockets will need a win in that game to even the series.
