Romanian football coach Mircea Lucescu has been transferred to intensive care after his condition deteriorated due to a heart rhythm disorder, according to a statement from Bucharest University Hospital.

Condition worsens after initial treatment response fails

Hospital officials said Lucescu, 80, experienced an increase in heart rhythm irregularities overnight and did not respond to treatment.

As a result, his condition worsened, leading doctors to move him to the intensive care unit for closer monitoring.

Health concerns follow recent hospitalization during national team camp

Lucescu had already been receiving treatment since March 29, when he fell ill during the Romania national team camp and was taken to the hospital. At the time, his condition was described as stable, suggesting that his health has since taken a more serious turn.

Developments come after recent separation from Romania role

The latest update follows a series of recent developments surrounding Lucescu’s role with the national team. Romania, under his management, lost 1-0 to Türkiye in the semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers play-offs on March 26.

Shortly after, on April 2, the Romanian Football Federation announced that it had parted ways with the experienced coach.
