Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has lashed out at a social media phenomenon following the team's 1-1 draw against West Ham United, blaming the online "circus" for distracting the club.
Under new manager Michael Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim, United had found a new rhythm, winning four consecutive league matches. However, the streak came to an end last night, sparking a bizarre debate involving a fan's hair.
The draw had implications beyond the league table. In October 2024, Frank Ilett, a social media content creator, vowed not to cut his hair until Manchester United won five competitive games in a row.
Over the course of the challenge, Ilett gained 1.3 million followers. Before the West Ham match, he was confident, telling followers: "This hair is going soon... We've done 4 out of 5. This time it happens."
Even manager Michael Carrick admitted in his pre-match press conference that he was aware of Ilett and the challenge.
Speaking after the match, Wayne Rooney did not hold back, suggesting the narrative around Ilett had overshadowed football.
"If I could, I'd send him to the other end of the country. He does my head in," Rooney said.
"We are talking about Michael Carrick and Man United trying to get their fifth win in a row, but everyone is talking about this guy getting his haircut," he added.
Rooney also questioned the fan's motives: "I am sure if Man United won, he would be devastated because he would become irrelevant."
