Reports circulating in Turkish media claiming that NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has begun talks to acquire Anadolu Efes have been denied by sources familiar with the club’s communications, Türkiye Today has learned.
According to information shared with Türkiye Today by individuals involved in Anadolu Efes’ external relations, there are currently no discussions or negotiations underway regarding a potential sale of the club to O’Neal or any entities linked to him.
The timing of these claims has stood out, as discussions are unfolding ahead of the planned launch of an NBA Europe League in 2027.
Despite the backdrop, Anadolu Efes sources stressed that the club’s ownership structure remains unchanged and that no takeover talks are taking place.
Public interest around the reports intensified after Shaquille O’Neal was seen in Istanbul on Jan. 20, where he took part in a basketball event with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
At the same event, O’Neal and Erdogan took photos with young athletes, highlighting the gathering’s focus on sports and youth development. The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Askin Bak, National Intelligence Organization head Ibrahim Kalin, senior figures from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), and Turkish Basketball Federation President Hidayet Turkoglu, indicating that the occasion carried institutional as well as sporting significance.
No official statement has been issued by either Shaquille O’Neal or Anadolu Efes, but sources close to the matter say reports suggesting active talks are inaccurate.
Shaquille O’Neal remains one of the most recognizable figures in global basketball, known for four NBA championships, 15 All-Star selections, and a reputation as one of the most dominant centers in league history.
Since stepping away from professional play, he has continued to build his profile through media appearances, social platforms, and music performances under the stage name DJ Diesel, allowing him to stay connected with audiences worldwide.
