Domenico Tedesco has been dismissed as head coach of Fenerbahce shortly after holding talks over a possible contract extension, in remarks to Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), where he said the decision caught him off guard.
Speaking to DPA, Tedesco said his departure came unexpectedly, as the club had only recently discussed extending his contract ahead of schedule. He noted that they had been in talks about continuing their cooperation, but added that the sides went their separate ways after the team’s second league defeat of the season.
The decision followed a 3-0 loss to league leaders and city rivals Galatasaray in a high-profile Istanbul derby, a fixture known globally for its intensity and significance.
Tedesco, who previously managed Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig, took charge of Fenerbahce in September, replacing Jose Mourinho early in the season. Over the course of his tenure, he led the team in 45 official matches.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Tedesco suggested that the initial goal had been to build a sustainable project over time. “That shows once again how fast-moving football has become,” he said, adding that when he arrived, the intention had been to develop something lasting and approach things differently from previous methods.
