Super Lig team Samsunspor has found itself at the center of controversy after attempting to sign Portuguese defender Joe Mendes without informing his parent club, Braga. The unexpected move could lead to a formal complaint being filed with FIFA.
Following a strong season in the Turkish Super Lig, where they finished third with 64 points, Samsunspor began preparations for the upcoming campaign with high ambitions. The club had recently stirred excitement among fans by promising a "star signing," often dubbed a cilek transfer in local terms.
However, according to journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, the club may have crossed the line in its efforts. Samsunspor allegedly arranged a flight and brought Joe Mendes to Türkiye without notifying Braga or receiving permission from the player's representatives.
In response, Braga has reportedly recalled the player to join their pre-season training camp in Austria and is preparing to file a complaint with FIFA against Samsunspor. The Portuguese club argues that both their consent and proper transfer protocol were ignored.
It remains unclear how this situation will impact Mendes's future and whether the transfer will proceed. FIFA’s decision in the coming days will determine whether the player can officially join the Super Lig club or if disciplinary measures will be taken.
