Türkiye's leading women’s tennis player, Zeynep Sonmez, has moved up to 79th place in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings.
Her achievement marks one of the most significant steps forward in her career and a notable moment for Turkish tennis.
The WTA updated its rankings after the conclusion of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. Before the event, Sonmez was ranked 112th in the world.
Her progress to the third round of the tournament lifted her by 33 places, allowing her to settle at number 79 in the global standings.
Sonmez made history by becoming the first Turkish player to reach the third round of the Australian Open in the tournament’s history.
At 23 years old, Sonmez continues to build on earlier success.
Away from the final, Türkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez brought her Australian Open campaign to an end in the third round after a three-set loss to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva at Melbourne’s KIA Arena.
Sonmez, who went into the match ranked 112 in the world, pushed Putintseva (ranked 94) all the way before going down 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Her exit still wrapped up a landmark tournament for Turkish tennis, as she became the first Turkish player to reach the third round of the season’s first Grand Slam.
Last year, she reached a career-high world ranking of 69, which remains her personal best so far.
